A Message from our Director

I hope this New Year blooms with good health, luck, prosperity, and joyful moments you and your loved ones will cherish throughout the year. As we reflect on the last couple of years, we cannot help but replay the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to our community. In spite of the challenges, there were new opportunities for collaboration, networking, and support to bring COVID-19 resources to our community. Now, two years later, as we accept the present flow of things and grow through change, there is still uncertainty as we navigate the COVID-19 landscape. The pandemic demonstrated the challenges our community continues to face every day. Although COVID-19 has put our organization through trying times over the last two years, these challenges have only made us stronger. We remain positive and maintain our purpose of service as we move forward with our mission and vision of teaching the community members we connect with, the positive impact developing a sense of empowerment and engagement can have for themselves and their families. We recognize the importance of continuing our current programs as well as developing new programs so we can continue to serve and meet the needs of our community members. It continues to be a great pleasure of mine to work with our amazing staff, resilient volunteers, and outstanding partners, all with the support of our funders, as we meet the current goals we have and plan to meet the future goals. We will continue to support and encourage growth, confidence, and better opportunities for our community through the foundation of our mission and vision, which promotes justice and equality for everyone we serve.

How We Started

Boat People SOS (BPSOS) is well-known across the Vietnamese community from the East to the West Coast and currently operating in 6 states in the United States and 1 overseas branch in Bangkok, Thailand. BPSOS was founded in the 1980s among a group of Vietnamese American academicians in San Diego. They saw that there was a great need to protect the livelihood and rights of over 3,000 boat people at sea, in asylum camps, and in detention centers. BPSOS started as an advocacy organization for the Vietnamese community, however it has grown tremendously as BPSOS's scope of work has expanded to the resettlement of over 20,0000 former boat people.

Today, BPSOS - Center for Community Advancement (BPSOS-CCA), formerly known as BPSOS CA, has been serving the community since 2000 as part of the national BPSOS network of branch offices. BPSOS-CCA is a thriving resource center that provides resources and services to the Vietnamese community in Orange County. We continually work in partnership with other organizations to efficiently provide services, offer high-quality assistance for clients to navigate resources and share information about important policy changes in a culturally competent way. At our office, our daily work orbits around the goal to empower the community in their pursuit of liberty and dignity.
